Is All Diversity Created Equal? Reckoning with Representation in Music Law and Practice
How can we talk about diversity in music when the very data meant to capture it remain incomplete or missing altogether? This interactive workshop invites musicians, professionals, researchers, and policymakers to explore the blind spots in how diversity is measured, represented, and understood across the music sector. Drawing on preliminary findings from the upcoming OpenMusE report, the session will discuss key data gaps in diversity indicators and test policy recommendations designed to bridge them.
Participants will reflect on the gap between high-level cultural policy frameworks and everyday industry practice, where diversity is often reduced to what content is produced or who is visible on stage. Together, we’ll examine what gets left out of the picture, from invisible labour and unequal opportunities to the narrow metrics that shape decision-making and diversity outcomes.
