When AI Tops the Charts: Working Together Towards a Fair and Transparent Streaming Ecosystem (presented by ECSA in the frame of their Creators’ Talks series)

Thousands of new AI tracks are uploaded on the music streaming platforms on a daily basis. This massive flood of AI-generated music is having a profound impact on creators and the entire streaming value chain. As most of this content is unlicensed, these mass uploads risks diluting the royalty pool for actual music and other rightsholders. Moreover, AI-generated music is still very often not labelled as such, and is even pushed algorithmically by certain platforms, with potentially adverse impacts on the discoverability of European music and cultural diversity. Given the opacity surrounding it, it is no surprise that AI music is often used for streaming fraud, frequently by impersonating real artists, with Deezer reporting that 85% of streams from AI tracks are fraudulent. In this context, what measures can streaming platforms and industry stakeholders take to tackle these challenges and ensure a fair and transparent use of AI across the streaming value chain?

This session is co-funded by Creative Europe.
